According to English calendar it will be in between October and November. For Telugu people according to English calendar they will celebrate in the month of December. According to Tamil people On this day Karthikeya, the son of lord Shiva killed the demon Soorapadman. So people celebrate this day as a festival. This day is dedicated to the second son of Lord Shiva . According to Telugu people It is the birthday of Skanda. His name is Lord Subramanya, also known as Kartikeya, Kumara swami, Guha, Murugan, Shanmukha and Velayudhan. It is customary to undergo penance on Skanda Sashti in the form of carrying a “Kavadi” to the various Subramanya shrines or temples. Many devotees also pierce long needles through their cheeks, lips and tongue as they go into a delirium charmed by the powers of the Lord. You can do this Pooja on all six days of the Skanda Shasti Vratam or on the Soorasamharam day. Generally people chant Skanda sasthi kavacham during these days. Skanda Shasti Kavasam is composed by Devaraya Swamigal. This is a rare and valuable treasure that helps one to be successful in day to day life.

7. Ganesha pooja procedure book or printout.
8. Ghee for lighting cotton lamp.
9. Flowers.

Prashad cooking procedure:

1) Pulihora (Tamarind rice):

Ingredients:

1. Rice - 1 cup
2. Tamarind - 1 lemon size
3. Asafetida - a pinch
4. Dried red chilies - 2
5. Roasted peanuts - 3 tbsp
6. Oil - 4 tbsp
7. Salt as per taste
8. Turmeric powder – 1 pinch

For powder:

Fry the mustard seeds 1 tsp, methi seeds ½ tsp, 1 tbsp of sesame seeds, 2 red chilies and powder them.
Method
1. First cook the rice and let it cool.
2. Soak the tamarind in 2 cups of warm water and extract the juice from it. The consistency of the juice should be thick.
3. Take a pan. Add 1 tsp of oil and fry the mustard seeds1/2 tsp, chana dal ½ tsp, urad dal ½ tsp, 2 red chilies and curry leaves-6.Fry until mustard seeds splutter.
4. Add the roasted powder to the mixture.
5. Add a pinch of asafetida, turmeric powder, tamarind extract and salt. Keep stirring continuously till the tamarind extract becomes thick.
6. Now mix the gravy and cooked rice and add the roasted peanuts. Mix well.
7. Tamarind rice is ready.

2) Puranpoli (Sweet stuffed Chapatis):

Ingredients:

chana dal 1 1/2 cups
Jaggery 1 1/2 cups
Cardamom 2 (powdered)

Cook the chana dal till soft. Don’t over cook the dal. Now using a food processor grind the whole mixture of grated jaggery, cardamom powder, cooked chana dal. This is known as poornam or chana dal mixture. If the mixture becomes too soft it’s difficult to make round balls. So cook on the stove for 10-15 minutes for thick consistency. Allow the mixture to cool. Now take small portion of poornam and make round balls out of it.

Maida Dough:

2cups of all purpose flour (Maida)
Oil 3 tbsp
2 pinches of salt
Mix all the above ingredients with water. The consistency of the dough should be softer than chapathi dough. The dough should be stretched easily. Cover the dough with lid and leave it for an hour.
Take the Maida and make round balls out of it. The ball size should be ½ or 1/3 the size of poornam ball. It means that more poornam and less Maida.
Now take an aluminum foil or Plastic zip lock bag. Apply some oil or ghee on it. Take the Maida dough and make it like a small chapathi. Now put the poornam ball in the middle and close it from all sides completely like when you stuff curry in parathas dough. Now roll it like a chapathi using a roller or you can spread the dough like a chapathi using your hand. Apply oil to your hands so that the dough can be spread very easily. Now take a pan and apply oil or ghee and cook the bobbatlu on low heat. Before serving apply some more Ghee to it. Enjoy bobbatlu the yummy sweet.
After Subramanya or Skanda Pooja offer the prashad to and have the Prashad and take blessings from him.

Significance:

If anyone is suffering from delay in marriage, financial problems are advised to perform Pooja with their gotra names on that day in temple or at home. Devotees usually narrate the Skanda sashti kavacham during this period. Whoever fasts for these six days of Skanda Sashti and prays to Lord Murugan, it is said that they would get the blessings of Lord Muruga. Those who are unable to fast for a whole day for six day duration can eat just one meal during this period.
